Matt F. grew up in Tucson, Arizona. He traded desert heat for Pacific Northwest damp, where he was a G. Herbert Smith scholar at Willamette University.

In the 1990s he founded artsoregon, an alternative arts journal; began the Spare Room, an experimental gallery; and worked on a series of projects involving medieval siege engines and the international mail art network.

With masters degrees in studio art and art history, Matt teaches at New York University and Parsons School of Design. He lives in Pleasantville, New York, with his wife, an art historian, and his young daughter.
